World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad 2016
#11
Well, I would say that was a great effort for the first round. Losing 3-1 against such a strong Romanian side was a good team result where we were competitive on all boards. Very well done to everyone out there representing Team Scotland.

A double round day tomorrow starting at 9 am our time. In round 2 we have one of the Slovakian teams who will be easier opponents than our first round partners, Romania. That doesn't mean they will be easy, far from it! One thing I have discovered at these pinnacle events is that it can often be hard to track down games of juniors, particularly from Eastern Europe who haven't played at events like the World Youth, Euroyouth etc. However, they can track down plenty of ours.

Great photos and write up from our mystery squad scribe (is it Monica?). This is turning out to be another fantastic renewal of this event with quality accommodation, venue and live coverage from the clearly very well organised team from the Slovakian hosts. Good to see our friends from Ireland competing but not sure why the other British Isles countries declined to participate.

3-1 for Scotland with some very hard fought games. There are no easy matches at this level and it's great to get that win under our belt. Well done!

Germany 2 this afternoon starting at 3.30 our time. Their five squad players are all rated above 2000 (some well over) so a real tough match ahead but I am sure we can pose them problems.

Well, we posed them considerable problems eventually losing 1.5-2.5, the highlight being Ben Volland, Fide grade 1605 chopping down a 2103 WFM.
Murad drew and Monica lost, both in wild games that could have gone either way.
Euan also lost but only because when looking like heading for a draw v his 2276 graded opponent, he thought he had spotted a win in time trouble and went for it. You did the right thing Euan, keep looking for the win against these guys because they want you to just sit there and try and hang on.

Another great team performance, keep it going.
