Inverness Congress

A week to go until the congress starts and there are only 2 places left in the tournament, (unless you persuade me your presence could greatly enhance the competition).

If you could see your way to one in the U2200 and one in the U1450 that would be good.

The organisers this year are taking more of a back seat this year, by back seat I mean more than 200 miles away, and have left me on my own, so this could get interesting. 

Obviously if you arrive early perhaps you could offer a hand in the setting up and putting away of the equipment.

Draws and results will appear on the Chess tour site, there is a link from the front page.

All the games will also appear at a later date, depending on legibility.

forgive me for my stupidity John but I can't find the pairings anywhere. Not that I am playing but if I can't find it then probably some others can't either.

just spotted Connor Sibbald is paired against David Burke in round 1. Pretty certain David is not playing - have texted David to check. He told me he had emailed the organisers withdrawing?

I think you'll find Hamish is just not welcome, being over 2200 has nothing to do with it.

Apologies for the short notice, an unfortunate accident prevented my attendance;   on the entry receipt was the following "Any problems reply to this email"  which my wife duly did on 30th August.

Ironically given the noticeboard discussion I had a delightful time at Inverness Congress despite not being welcome .  Thanks for organising! (Combined a visit to Inverness grandparents with spectating at the chess tournament).

I understand that the reason the "open" is u2200 is because the time control is too quick for players over 2200 to play FIDE rated games as per the section "Rate of Play" at this link https://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.html?...ew=article

That is understandable as I remember there were problems with the venue wanting to serve breakfast whilst games were starting etc. and various things like that in the past.

I do wonder if there is a nice solution that allows everyone to participate whilst sticking with the same venue (I'd have loved to play). The key phrase in the regulations is "For a game to be rated". Could you not have an open where games between <2200 are FIDE rated and games where one or more players rated >2200 are not? That allows everyone to play - it's not an ideal solution but it seems a decent compromise unless I am missing something?

That solution is exactly how it is now done by FIDE, as I understand it, obviously I could be wrong.

We probably could advertise it as an open but then FIDE would not rate any games played by the over 2200s.

That would then impact on those wishing to play the 5 rated games, possibly swings and roundabouts.
