AGM
#21
Writing this as Andy's club mate and, I think, someone who does things outside of the club and the Glasgow League!

Firstly I would advise Andy not to play OTB and talk to people as that can lead to disqualification and would certainly disturb his opponent!
Secondly, he is, in my opinion, being overly negative. He talks of failure by juniors and mentions one event failing to consider the great successes that our juniors are achieving. Just as one swallow doesn't make a summer, one bad result does not make a crisis. The future of chess in Scotland is brighter than it has been for many years.
Olympiad seeding is a bit misleading. The Olympiad is run as a Swiss, as such only the top and bottom positions are a true reflection of strength. The luck of the draw in the last couple of rounds can mean a difference of 20 or 30 places in the final standings.

Andy there are loads of Paisley players playing outside the Glasgow League and the CS President is a member of Paisley Chess Club There is also a lot of enthusiasm within the club as well so I'm at a loss with your comments. Perhaps your solution would be to turn up at club nights and engage with your fellow enthusiasts.

Failures by juniors : last place in Glorney Cup
Failures by adults: no IMs in last 20 years, finished below seedings in Olympiads for 20 years
I shall not be attending the online AGM this year, I shall be playing chess instead, OTB and actually speaking to people.

lets take this one at a time
1. what you define as failure is results, what I define as a success is the steadily improving strength of our Juniors thanks to our Junior Management team of Harry and Sherry with virtually no financial resources. Dont forget we successfully hosted the event AGAIN!
2. Failure by Adults , well speak to Hamish and Murad then with no financial resources. Admittedly there is a generation gap which will be filled over time caused by resources , austerity and general bias by successive politicians from the UK . But this time I'm not getting into politics I'm going to pull my resources into providing the best possible resources. Had we he resources we would get better results and us wood shifters have full time jobs as well.
3. Sorry you wont be at the AGM this year, genuinely, but I will be there causing the usual constructive mayhem without the accompanying negativity. My vision of CS isnt popular but at least I will be contributing.
Glad you will be playing over the board and talking to people, its what chess should be about

Perhaps we should get back on thread and stick to matters AGM

One of the major difficulties with Online Voting versus In Attendance voting is that any amendment or modification means that only those present can vote. This essential means that those voting earlier can overrule any proposal presented by the attendees regardless of reasonable arguments put forward and are not giving the opportunity to reassess their vote and cast a modified vote.

A solution would be to defer any vote requiring an agreed amendment/modification to defer that particular motion vote for (say 1 week) to allow reassessment and potentially change their vote. Essential deferring that specific AGM item. It would need to be published on the CS website with immediate effect and allow.

The Constitution does not prohibit an AGM deferment – it therefore becomes a continuation of the AGM within a prescribed time scale (as earlier intimated – 1 week).

The membership has the right to know all the facts presented and certainly before the 4 weeks necessary to publish the minutes.

The alternative is to ask the AGM to call an SGM specific to the modified motion containing the original motion and the proposed newly worded motion. The AGM does actually have the authority to call a SGM with a majority vote of these actually present.

The AGM is the overriding authority over all matters by-passing Executive, Management and Council.

Hi Guys
I have written to Andy Howie asking for my nomination to council be revoked. I strongly feel that 3-4 members of council for non-management board is totally ineffective and I feel that apathy rising to total lack of interest will be detriment to the genuine interests of Chess Scotland. | cant do any more if there is no interest in Chess Scotland, I can only give up frustrated
