It just struck me as odd that in these FIDE events FIDE ungraded players are assigned grades based I assume on their performance that weekend in contrast to the graded players grade. These grade estimates are then also used by CS for grading purposes. If it had been a SWISS the results would have been ignored.

Only just spotted this thread.

I had always assumed that the only results CS imported from FIDE rated events were those games against players who had a current published FIDE grade at the time of the event. I thought this applied regardless of the format of the event. However that may not be the case.

Can you Mike give an example of a player getting credit in the CS domestic system for a game against a player who was FIDE unrated at the time of the event. This is applying to events listed as FIDE imports eg <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://chessscotland.com/event2012/events2012.htm">http://chessscotland.com/event2012/events2012.htm</a><!-- m --> - then pick "Outside Scotland events" and then the headers listed as FIDE Imports.

I manually add games if is two Scots playing each other and one or other is non FIDE rated - so that would be an example. However I assume Mike is meaning something other than these games.

I now see that unrated players are appearing as graded players in the import routine when it's an APA.

eg Eoin Campbell's opponent Sam Herring was unrated prior to the event but in Eoin's record with a rating of 1674.

As pointed out if you beat an unrated in a Swiss it wont count even if they are published in the next list.

As to fairness. The current rules are straight forward enough that players know which games will count - albeit they wont know the exact level of unrateds in an APA. I suppose FIDE might be able to restrospectively assign grades for all unrateds in Swisses in a rating period but then players wont know until the next rating period whether a game counted or not.

My use of 'unfair' was perhaps not quite the correct term. Just that it was tough to have your only wins in an event discounted because the opponents you beat do not have a grade.

As with most 'unfair' things in life they tend to even out over time - last year J. benefited from having a win against am unrated player being counted as it was an APA (E2E4 Sunningdale Aug. 2011], and this year it worked against him because he lost to an unrated player [Gatwick Aug. 2012]. When I say against or for him I really only me in terms of calculating his grade.
