I coached the Glorney team recently so I am not a complete baddy. I don't get much involved with juniors as it is fraught with problems.

I've decided to talk about serious chess for a change. I cannot find an example of the Moultrie Defence in Scottish annals (maybe I was the promoter and it should be the Muir Defence) but I have found a great example of the Moultrie Attack. Alistair Hunter was one of Scotland's promising young players in the early 1980s. and I believe he was leading the Scottish Championship at one point. George draws comfortably with a perpetual at the end.

Clever play by both on move 31. It seems as though Black can win immediately with Qf8 staying on the rook on f1, but White has Ne4!! (it’s probably better that this finish didn’t happen).

Hence 31 … Qxg6!? protecting e4 but abandoning the threat to the rook – a good enough move, however the computer has spotted that after Qf5! instead, both functions are retained and justice is served. Very logical – why didn’t the humans just think about it logically.. Qf8 looks the natural move to consider though, as the queen is protected there, I'd have probably banged it er, played that myself.

the Glorney/Gilbert site, downloaded the games...

Congratulating a team for finishing last would only happen in Scotland: We tried our best, played with pride but got the wooden spoon. Well done! So many positives to take from this... Yawn....

We have been hyping players up for years and what good has come of it? I haven't been following the results but the players should go and work very, very hard and come back and try again next year.

Yes David, my comments were more of a general nature.. but anyway I see the end result which is enough information to gauge how the teams performed overall.

Its not some much what Andy says but the way he says it. Most people realise that Andy actually means well and in some ways he is just stirring up a debate.

It was Andy who brought it on himself - "Moderated myth by Scottish delusionists: Scotland won the Glorney and Gilbert tournaments comfortably as usual" - I cant see the post or what prompted Andy to say that - perhaps if I could, his comments might be justified. This was on top of Andy wrongly saying players from his own club were boycotting the tourney.

We cant afford to play with so many of our best and key players missing- for me that's were we went wrong.
